iVote Maryland Empowers Young Adults To Vote

14 Mar

Baltimore, Maryland- In the fall of 2010, Senator Larry Young of the popular 1010 WOLB, “ The Larry Young Morning Show” and Konan, Radio personality of WERQ-92.3 gathered together other radio colleagues, media partners and musical talent to plan to execute a Rock the Vote-style festival; a one night only music concert featuring regional musical talent. The event was attended by and received support from Congressman Elijah Cummings, Senator Catherine Pugh, and 12th District Baltimore City Councilman Carl Stokes. Following the event and several weeks of meeting later, iVote Maryland was conceived to accomplish the mission of motivating young adults to get out and vote. iVote Maryland is a non-partisan movement created to educate and empower young adults to exercise their right to vote; through the vehicles of activism, technology, and entertainment.

The official iVote Maryland kick-off Concert and After Party will take place Tuesday March 29, 2011 at Bourbon Street (316 Guilford Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21202) from 7pm-2am. The event will feature live performances by Hip Hop and urban artists, an after party, on-site voter registration, step show, and special guest appearances by Radio One DJs, elected officials and surprise celebrity guests. Advance tickets for $11 are available at Radio One office, 1705 Whitehead Rd, Gwynn Oak, MD 21207.

With voting numbers for constituents in the age group of 18-29 being at a all time low in the 2010 Gubernatorial mid-term elections iVote Maryland was created to let young people know that there vote does matter and the issues that are significant to the 18-29 year old constituents such as violence, education and jobs can be changed through the power of voting. iVote Maryland strives to bridge the gap between disenfranchised young adults and public officials. iVote Maryland will be the vehicle for the voices of young Maryland residents to make sure those concerns are heard by campaigning and elected officials via town hall, community forums and other events.

Edu-Tainment! “My Pencil” MSA Rap (by Em Sea Water) #PoliticWithPermiss Exclusive

8 Mar

Based on the song by Wiz Khalifa “Black and Yellow.” This was made for Maryland State students taking the upcoming MSA’s or Maryland School Assessment Tests. Shot in two days with a Panasonic AG HVX200A, a Canon 7D, and the wonderful students at George Washington Elementary School in Baltimore, MD. Directed by Chip Dizard, written and performed by Em Sea Water.

About Em Sea Water:
Consistently pushing the margins of spoken word since his debut album, The Love Life EP, Em Sea Water remains a prominent poet and activist in Baltimore, MD. Recently collaborating with Grasshopper Philms to create a music video for The Box Theory (available on YouTube), while also preparing his first book The Em Sea Scrolls, which is an illustrated collection of poetry inspired by Shel Silverstein’s popular children’s books, A Light in The Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends.” The Em Sea Scrolls is scheduled for release in June 2011.

Water experienced success with his sophomore album, Hydrology, earning “Album of The Year” at the 2007 People’s Poetry Awards. His latest project, Nostalgia, established credibility as a balanced emcee and literary poet; blending jazz, soul, poetry and hip hop together into a musical collage. Released in March 2010, Nostalgia sends listeners through a lyrical time warp using samples from classic and contemporary music from artists such as Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Alicia Keys, Drake, and Trey Songs.

Em Sea Water earned the name “Water” from his natural ability to reflect his surroundings much like the ocean naturally reflects the sun. His poetry is openly personal, as his emotions are often transparent; like water. Also, recognizing his art as a gift from God, much like the gift of life is compared to water in John 4, “Whoever drinks of this water I give, will never thirst again.” Em Sea Water, whose real name is Borndavid McCraw, is rooted in Biblical values and uses poetry and life experience as a teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools. As a graduate of Coppin State University and active member of Poetry for The People Baltimore, the city still remains his muse for creating poetry. A multifaceted channel that reflects the images of his culture, Em Sea Water remains one of the most versatile writers of his generation. For more information about Em Sea Water, visit

OFFICIAL STATEMENT: 2011 DMV Music Awards Post-Event Statement

The DMV Music Awards Committee would like to thank everyone who supported the program this year in the efforts to unite various communities for a night of celebration and recognition. The committee is truly saddened by the unfortunate events that took place, and most importantly, we send prayers and apologies to those who were injured last night. This program was designed to be a positive effort on behalf of various people in the local entertainment industry who were planners, judges, power player voters, artists, and fans.

We also extend a deep apology to the Hyatt Crystal City for the events that took place. These acts, by no means, represent the positive nature of the “DMV” music scene as a whole. This community is comprised of thousands from Baltimore to northern Virginia who love to make music and support the artists who do so. It was in this spirit that the DMV Music Awards were created five years ago, and in this spirit, the “DMV” will continue to move forward in the efforts to share great work with the worldwide community of music fans.

Again, thank you to supporters, fans, sponsors, vendors, voters, judges, media and artists. With a theme of “Time to Build,” The 5th Annual DMV Music Awards received support this year from various people and companies in all genres and walks of life. We hope that your faith and appreciation for talent in this region does not waiver.

A complete list of award winners will be posted shortly.
